Pregnancy

DHA intake is extremely important during pregnancy and breastfeeding for both mother and baby. The human brain is dependent on DHA for proper growth and development, and it continues to accumulate DHA until 18 years of age. This makes it most aggressive from about halfway through pregnancy to two years of age. Infants who develop must absorb this important nutrient through the placenta during pregnancy and from breast milk after birth. Because the mother is the only source of DHA for the developing baby, it is crucial that pregnant and breastfeeding mothers consume enough omega-3 to contribute to the proper brain development of the baby. *

It is extra important to have enough omega-3 to maintain the body's normal functions and processes during pregnancy. Omega-3 fatty acids also contribute to the normal development of the baby's eyes and brain during pregnancy and in the first months after birth. *

Based on several strong studies on omega-3, EFSA has a health claim about the role of DHA in supporting the normal development of brain, eye and visual functions in the fetus and in infants up to 12 months. EFSA recommends that pregnant and breastfeeding mothers take a daily intake of 200 mg DHA in addition to the recommended daily dose of EPA and DHA which is 250 mg EPA and DHA. *
